My roots reach deeply into the history of this country and have had a tremendous influence on who I am. I come from hardy stock, patriots that fought in the Revolutionary War, both sides of the Civil War, and in almost every war since . On my fathers side they were Pennsylvania and Ohio dairy farmers of German and Irish decent. My Mother's side were resiliant southern mountain folk, a mix of Irish, Scot, and Cherokee. And my (step)mom's side were Hungarian immigrants from whom I learned to really appreciate the freedoms we have living in this country.
Most of my forefathers were pillars of propriety along with a few colorfull characters who were entrepenours whose businesses sometimes involved fast cars and white lightning. All were courageous, independent, hard working people who loved their country, their land, and most of all they loved their families.
Their pioneering spirit lives on in our family. With me it appeared as believing that you can accomplish almost anything you decide, without the restrictions of gender role specification.
My career started in graphics as a designer and sequed into being a creative consultant for a major corporation. I designed trade show booths, created public relations support materials, handled the theme design for corporate parties, produced training materials, and created visual displays for legal presentations.
About 25 years ago I started buying and rehabbing houses to resell. When it comes to renovation, I have done just about anything and everything. I take pride in knowing that when I finish a house I have helped improve the neighborhood by turning a declining property back into a safe, comfortable, attractive home.
It is my belief that with encouragement, patience, research, and practice, anyone can become comfortable doing basic home maintenance. And with some experience they may be able to tackle more extensive renovation projects. At the very least women need to be familiar with home maintenance even if they have no desire to do it themselves. And remember ladies, the ability to recognize maintenance issues and fix them should not be a gender specific skill.
In my blog I w ill be sharing some of my experiences, both good and bad, along with some hints on basic home maintenance.
